Senator Elisha Abbo has denied his admission of wrongdoing and public apology to plead not guilty to two counts of criminal use of force and criminal assault in court today.
The court has therefore granted him a 5 million naira bail and mandated him to present two competent sureties as a way of securing his appearance in subsequent hearings on the criminal charges.
Abbo was arraigned on Monday by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police at Zuba Magistrate Court, Abuja.
The opposition PDP senator, representing Adama North Senatorial District, was captured by security camera at an Abuja adult shop battering a nursing mother who pleaded with him not to assault the shopowner. Abbo accused the shopowner of calling him a drunk.
Although the reprehensible incident happened last May, CCTV footage only made way into the public space last Tuesday and has since sparked unprecedentedly intensed public outrage with many calling for his prosecution.
In the midst of the outrage that followed the video footage, the senator was forced to publicly apologise to his victim, the Nigerian Senate and the PDP.
He maintained that he had learnt his lesson and promised to epitomise good conduct thereaftrer.
“I personally apologize to Bibra and her family for my action towards her, which has brought immense discomfort in our body polity,” he had said.
“I have never been known or associated with such actions in the past.”
Scooper recalls that the Nigerian Senate last Wednesday, July 3, set up a seven-man adhoc-commitee to investigate the incident and report in two weeks.
